Police kill armed Oakton man

Shortly before 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 5, Fairfax County police officers responded to a call from an apparent suicidal man in the 3100 block of Summit Square Drive, in Oakton.

Officers were confronted by a man armed with a gun, on the sidewalk just outside his ground floor apartment.

Officers ordered the man to put the gun down. He refused, pointed the gun at the officers, who then shot him.

The 54-year-old man was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital and was pronounced dead. No officers were injured.

Criminal Investigation Bureau detectives and Crime Scene technicians responded to the scene, to investigate and process the evidence.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. An Autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

The officers involved in this incident have been placed on administrative leave while parallel criminal and administrative investigations proceed.
